Living with leukaemia is a journey that no one would willing chose, and, once on, is a journey that no one can tell you where it will take you or how it will end. Much depends upon who is at the centre of that journey and how they are supported along the way.
In our case, our beautiful daughter Aimee was just five years old when she was diagnosed with the disease. Now five years on leukaemia is still a part of our lives, sometimes in our very dark moments but increasingly there through moments that shine brightly because we have been blessed by the love and support that thousands upon thousands of people from around the world have brought to us.
Seems a large claim doesn't it – but take a moment to think of the fifty bone marrow donor registers around the world that were there for Aimee when she needed a one-in-a-million bone marrow donor match to prevent a third recurrence of the disease.
Aimee has also had a unique and special battalion in her corner. Her love of fairies, which like many other girls - was a big part of her childhood. Discovering that a great many adults loved fairies too, believed in them and could even let us lesser mortals see how they looked was a revelation that became a lifeline to her throughout endless rounds of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, a bone marrow transplant and serious and dangerous infections.
At times we were so surrounded by fairy tales, fairy images and fairy gifts that you could almost feel the beat of fairy wings by your cheek.
This fairy magic became so strong and persistent in surrounding Aimee – that it soon spilled over to the other children that we met along the way and we could see the special smile that anything fairy related brought to these ill youngsters – and so inspired by Aimee and these wonderful supporters the Fairy Box was borne.
A simple idea – this get well and cheer up gift, lovingly donated, provides an invisible hand and a fairy kiss which truly can turn an unhappy moment into something brighter.
The fairies may have inspired us to create such a magical channel but it is their human counterparts who open their hearts and send their love with a small gift or a donation that helps to place a gift in the Fairy Box and in turn keep this magical and positive energy going for children just when them need it most.
Light and love
