| Harlem Globe Trotters |
May 2005 |
We were invited to meet the Harlem Globe Trotters at the Hard Rock Cafe in Cardiff. The Trotters were performing at the CIA that evening, but were taking time out to meet and greet some of their fans.
We arrived at the Hard Rock and met up with the young people we had invited to join us. The Hard Rock allowed each of them to chose a gift from their shop (I did have my eye on t-shirt, but sadly, despite my best puppy dog eyes, I was not offered one) and we were encouraged to drink as much pop as is humanly possible, all courtesy of the Hard Rock.
Three of the Globe Trotters arrived and encouraged the young people to have a go at some of the tricks that are their trademark. You got to hand it to the young people with us, all of whom rose admirably to the challenge, especially when you consider the National News was also there, filming.
Everyone was undoubtedly enjoying themselves and while the Trotters grabbed some food, we sat and consumed our own food and drink. At this point one of the Trotters came over to meet the young people individually and say 'Hi'. Seems we all got a bit star struck at this point and but for one of the Mums there could have been an awkward silence.
We learnt that back in the States he had been a teacher and he seemed to have a genuine appreciation of what our young people were going through.
