| Children's Hospital Lunch |
May 2006 |
On the 14th May, in County Hall Cardiff, the Oncology and Haematology unit based at the new Children's Hospital for Wales hosted a bereavement lunch for parents who have lost a child to cancer.
This event takes place every two years and allows the parents and the staff, including the Play Therapy Team to meet and share memories, feelings and thoughts.
It is a poignant occasion that recognizes the need for the parents to commemorate and celebrate the life of their child. Some of the families may chose to offer a song, a piece of music or recite a personal poem. One family asked that a Liverpool football strip be placed in the hall, as their son was an avid and dedicated fan.
The day is as you might imagine filled with sadness and loss, but at the same time there is warmth, gratitude and humour. It is a genuine pleasure to meet up again with these families. For some families, the decision not to attend may be understood in terms of their overwhelming sense of loss; however each child has a place in a commemorative book. This book is dedicated to all of the children who have lost their lives to cancer. When you look through you are met with photographs of happy, smiling and often determined faces, together with the powerful words you can understand all the love that surrounds each child.
It is, and will always remain a pleasure and a privilege to meet and get to know the children and their families.
